Zecco.com offers commission free trades but slow customer service. For a college student who is tech-savvy and can research online, Zecco is great. They make their money off interest and options contracts, so they can afford to not charge commissions.
Scottrade and Ameritrade are decent - but your small $1000 deposit may incur inactivity fees.

scottrade only $7 trades nothing else. Be super careful this is a bear market.
